Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular – Review
Rod Laver Arena hosts a powerful and grand staging of the beloved musical
Attending Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, 24 May 2025, was an experience that exceeded expectations in many respects. The production successfully adapted the classic musical for a vast arena setting, delivering a performance that was both grand in scale and emotionally resonant.
The direction effectively utilised the expansive venue, transforming it into a space that could accommodate the epic narrative of Victor Hugo’s tale. The singers delivered outstanding performances, their voices filling the arena with the musical’s iconic melodies. The orchestra was equally impressive, providing a rich and powerful sound that enhanced the overall experience.
However, certain directorial decisions were perplexing. Notably, the use of standing microphones on stage, in addition to the performers being mic'd up, created a static visual. Performers often stood motionless in front of these microphones, which detracted from the dynamic storytelling typically associated with musical theatre. While characters like Thénardier and Valjean exhibited some acting, the overall lack of movement and interaction among the cast was noticeable.
The set design, while ambitious, presented challenges for audience members seated close to the stage. The framing with lights and projected backdrops was less visible from these vantage points, limiting the immersive quality of the visuals. Nonetheless, being in close proximity to the performers offered a unique opportunity to appreciate their expressions and vocal prowess.
Despite these staging choices, the core themes of Les Misérables, compassion, love, and redemption, remained potent and relevant. The audience responded enthusiastically, their engagement evident throughout the performance.
Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular at Rod Laver Arena delivered a powerful rendition of the classic musical, successfully adapting it for a large-scale venue. While certain staging decisions may have limited the theatrical dynamism, the exceptional vocal performances and orchestration ensured a memorable experience. The production reaffirmed the timeless appeal of Hugo’s narrative, resonating deeply with contemporary audiences.
